National Hispanic Media Coalition Announces Impact Award Series: Game Changers November 1st

The Impact Awards Series honoring community Game Changers will stream episode 1, this Sunday evening.  Hispanic Lifestyle is pleased to be providing digital production services for this event.

“NHMC believes in uplifting the voices of the Latinx communities. In that fight for social justice, we also push forward and support other people of color in the struggle. A threat to injustice anywhere is inevitably a threat to all of us,” said President & CEO, Brenda Victoria Castillo. “That’s what this Impact Awards Series is all about, recognizing Game Changers. Those who face these obstacles of injustice head on and strive to make a positive impact on society for us all, whether they realize it or not.“

This year, the National Hispanic Media Coalition will be partaking in our first ever virtual Impact Award Series sponsored by T-Mobile, Univision, Google, National Association of Broadcasters, Comcast NBCUniversal Telemundo, and Union Bank. This series honors Game Changers and will be hosted by the award-winning actor, Isabella Gomez. These honorees understand that hate and discrimination towards a particular community affects us all. Our honorees include:

Luis and Lin-Manuel Miranda, Activists and Philanthropists:
Luis and Lin-Manuel Miranda, Activists and Philanthropists: Luis A. Miranda Jr. is Founding Partner of The MirRam Group, a government affairs, lobbying and political consulting firm in New York City. He has previously served in three New York City mayoral administrations. Mr. Miranda is the Founding President of the Hispanic Federation and past chairman of the NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation. Lin-Manuel Miranda is a Pulitzer Prize, Grammy, Emmy and Tony award-winning composer, lyricist and actor. He is the creator and original star of Broadway’s Tony-winning Hamilton and In the Heights. Miranda is the recipient of the 2015 MacArthur Foundation Award and the 2018 Kennedy Center Honors. He received an Emmy Award with Tom Kitt for their song, “Bigger” from the 67th Annual Tony Awards.

U.S. Congresswoman Veronica Escobar:
Congresswoman Veronica Escobar is a third-generation El Pasoan that proudly represents Texas’ 16th Congressional District. She took office on January 3, 2019 as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives after making history as the first woman elected to this seat and the first of two Latinas from Texas to serve in Congress. Rep. Escobar serves on the prestigious House Judiciary Committee and House Armed Services Committee. She holds leadership positions on both the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) and the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC), as the Freshman Representative and Vice Chair, respectively. She is also Vice Chair of the Democratic Women’s Caucus and Co-Chair of the Women’s Working Group on Immigration.

Actor and Producer Gina Torres:
Gina Torres is well known for her role as Jessica Pearson on USA Network’s hit original series Suits. Torres most recently toplined and executive produced Pearson, which saw her Suits character take on the world of Chicago politics. Included amongst Torres’s most notable television credits are her performances as the RussoCuban assassin Anna Espinosa on Alias, the shotgun-toting mercenary Zoe Washburn on Joss Whedon’s “Firefly” (whom she also played in his feature film SERENITY) and the soul-eating Jasmine on Whedon’s “Angel.”

U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders:
Bernie Sanders is a U.S. Senator from Vermont and former candidate to become the next President of the United States. In 2006, he was elected to the U.S. Senate after 16 years as Vermont’s sole congressman in the House of Representatives. Bernie is now serving his third term in the U.S. Senate after winning re-election in 2018 with 67 percent of the vote.

Actor Lisa Vidal:
Award winning actor Lisa Vidal, is not a newcomer to the challenging multi-layered roles she’s been successfully portraying. Most recently, she was seen in the ABC series, The Baker and the Beauty. She is also recognized for the regular roles she’s played on popular hit primetime series such as Boston Legal, CSI Miami, The Division, ER, Third Watch and Southland, Being Mary Jane, and Rosewood.

Actor Sarunas Jackson:
Sarunas Jackson was born in Philadelphia and raised in California’s Inland Empire. After playing Ameture Athletic Union (AAU) and professional basketball overseas, he began to explore acting more seriously. He began booking commercial gigs then small roles in projects including Chi-Raq and Transparent. While best known for his role as ‘DRO’ on the hit HBO series Insecure, Sarunas can currently be seen on the series Games People Play and Good Trouble.

Rashad Robinson, President of Color of Change:
Color of Change is a leading racial justice organization with more than 7 million members. Rashad is among the first in a global cohort of Atlantic Fellows for Racial Equity, and writes a monthly column about race, politics and corporate accountability for The Guardian. Rashad appears regularly in major news media and is often invited as a keynote speaker nationally.

NHMC is a 35 year old nonprofit 501(c)(3) civil rights organization that was founded to eliminate hate, discrimination, and racism towards the Latino community.

We educate and increase visibility of Latinx from our policy work in Washington D.C. to our media advocacy work in Hollywood where we collaborate, create, and connect Latinx talent with the entertainment industry. At NHMC we focus on all forms of media because it is one of the most influential and powerful institutions that exist. The media can have important effects on the attitudes, values, and beliefs of society.

NHMC collaborates with other social justice organizations to eliminate online hate and hold online platforms accountable for their content. We advocate for the Lifeline Program, Net Neutrality protections, and also work in closing the digital divide for Latino and other marginalized communities. NHMC works in partnership with other civil rights organizations to safeguard democracy in the United States of America.
