NALIP 2013: Spotlight on the Trillion $ Latino Market

This is presented by Time Warner and the National Latino Media Council. Co-chairs Natalia Almada and Rosa V. Alonso will host the annual premier Latino nonprofit gathering of top-level Latino executives, content makers and game changers in the Latino media field. This dynamic, star-studded three-day weekend includes keynotes, debate, inspiration, plenaries, ‘Conversations With,’ workshops and unforgettable networking events. The conference begins Friday, with keynote speaker Richard Peña, current WNET/PBS Co-host and former program director of the Film Society of Lincoln Center and Director of the New York Film Festival. Saturday’s keynote will be motivational speaker Glenn Llopis, who develops talent and prepares organizations for opportunities of the 21st Century global market place.

NALIP will celebrate Latino visionaries by hosting a red carpet gala honoring film, television legend, and star of the upcoming film “Machete Kills” Danny Trejo with NALIP’s highest honor, the Lifetime Achievement Award. NALIP will be awarding “Filly Brown” star Gina Rodriguez with the first annual The Lupe Award in honor of the spirited and beloved Lupe Ontiveros. Additional media luminaries being honored at the annual gala include the National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts, founded in 1997 by Jimmy Smits, Esai Morales, Sonia Braga, Felix Sanchez and Merel Julia. The Foundation will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award for Advocacy presented by Heineken for their continuous efforts for increased Latino representation in the Hollywood community. The Estela “Rising Star’ Award winners Ben DeJesus for “Tales From a Ghetto Klown,” which follows John Leguizamo as he returns to Broadway with his one-man show, and Aurora Gutierrez for “Mosquita y Mari,” a 2012 Sundance Film Festival favorite, will be awarded a $7,500 grant endowed by the McDonalds Corporation

In addition to engaging Hollywood’s elite, NALIP also brings together the industry’s current trendsetters. This will be exemplified in one very special sneak preview screening during the conference. Friday night, “Water & Power” by Richard Montoya, of Culture Clash, will be shown in a private screening at Universal City’s AMC Theatres. Twin brothers nicknamed “Water” and “Power” from the hard scrabble Eastside streets of Los Angeles rise like princes through the city’s political and police ranks to become players in a complex and dangerous web of the powerful and corrupt of Los Angeles. The cast of this film noire includes Enrique Murciano, Nicholas Gonzalez, Clancy Brown, and Yvette Yates. After the screening Montoya, producer Mark Roberts and cast members will join Richard Peña for a Q&A session. This screening is presented in partnership with the Sundance Institute, where the film was mentored at the Screenwriters Lab by noted writer Howard A. Rodman.

The Conference will also include NALIP’s annual Latino Media Market, inviting top industry executives to help attendees bring their authentic, unique and diverse voices to the international market place. The NALIP national conference is organized as three days of workshops and plenaries on film, television and documentaries, plus groundbreaking case studies. These include “The Million Dollar Screenwriting Workshop”, which turns writing into an effortless, step-by-step process. “Reality TV: From Idea to Air and Beyond”

“Movie & TV Marketing Trends in the 21st Century Studio,” “Packaging your Documentary for Success,” discusses how to best present a project pitch, proposal and trailer.

“The Next Generation: Latino Trailblazers” features actors Gina Rodriguez, Nicholas Gonzales, Jesse Garcia, Jeremy Ray Valdez and Justina Machado. Also scheduled is the must-see opening plenary, “Media Trends and the Trillion $ Latino Market” which will explain the significance of Latino voices as a powerhouse in the global market.

One in six Americans is now Hispanic. The size of the U.S. Hispanic poulation worldwide ranked second only to Mexico with 50.5 million to 112 million respectively. Forbes Magazine has called the Latino Market the “New Media Jackpot.” Hispanics’ spending patterns help to determine the success or failure of many youth-oriented products and services; 65% of U.S. Hispanics are Millenials, ages 22 to 35. Latinos watch more television, buy more movie tickets and consume more media than any other ethnicity, yet Latinos comprise less than 1% of executives in Hollywood. Latinos are estimated to expend over $1 billion on U.S. filmed entertainment, and $1 trillion in general market-buying power. Twenty-six million U.S. moviegoers are Latino, most commonly between the ages of 12 and 34, and are 100% more likely than the national average to be considered “frequent moviegoers.” Nielsen Media has determined that Latinos represent an overwhelming 28% of today’s heavy moviegoers, that they buy more tickets per year than any other ethnic group, and constitute the fastest-growing segment of the overall movie-going population.

NALIP’s closing plenary, Latino Images, will engage in an insightful and important conversation about the how Latino filmmakers are creating new positive and complex images about and for the diverse Latino communities. NALIP’s mission is to address the vital need for equitable Latino representation to the most underrepresented and largest ethnic minority in the country across all entertainment mediums.
