The Way We Travel | San Diego County Fair

Culture, food, and community come together under the summer sun
A scenic drive down the 15 Freeway on a Saturday led our family to a surprising first: a trip to the iconic San Diego County Fair. It’s hard to believe we hadn’t been there before. I know this is a beloved summer tradition for many families. The fair that dates back to 1880 and has called the Del Mar Fairgrounds home since 1936.
We spent the afternoon walking through the exhibits, eating ice cream, taking in all the sights and sounds of a county fair. We weren’t alone. I noticed there were lots of families spending time together enjoying the rides, listening to music and watching the entertainment. Eating was definitely a community experience. If you were sitting at a table and there was an empty space, people invited themselves to join you. Very cool.
To my Southern California friends, we encourage you to take some time in the next couple of weeks to visit the San Diego Fair. Enjoy the weather, eat some good food, and have a great time. The tickets are affordable, but be prepared to spend a bit on food. A slice of pizza can easily cost you over $9. My personal favorite is the Mac and Cheese Lobster, which comes in at $22.
As someone always scouting for inspiration, especially for our Home, Tu Casa series, I was drawn to the exhibits showcasing local landscaping and outdoor design. I also found inspiration in the photography and art displays full of heart, story, and vision from our region’s creatives.
It’s the summer, and if have kids out of school, this is the perfect place to spend the day.
