Commissioner Luz Urbáez Weinberg was first elected to the City of Aventura Commission in 2005 after taking 63% of the vote in a three-way race. At 32, Ms. Weinberg became the youngest and first Hispanic ever to serve the City of Aventura’s council. She was re-elected unopposed in 2010. Authority. Commissioner, City of Aventura NALEO Vice President. In 2013, Governor Rick Scott appointed Ms. Weinberg to the Miami-Dade Expressway.

Ms. Weinberg is currently Vice President of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) and serves on the FIU Vice Provost Executive Council. Ms. Weinberg is a knowledgeable and energetic speaker who is often featured at special events and is a sought-after interview (CNN, C-SPAN, MSNBC, Univision, USA Today, the Washington Post, NPR and several others) on topics like the Census, the Latino Vote, the Miami Tunnel project and others. Ms. Weinberg is a also a writer, with over 400 published articles in English and Spanish.

A Magna Cum Laude psychology graduate of Florida International University and Miami-Dade College, Ms. Weinberg is Director of Communications for Bouygues Civil Works Florida’s Port Miami Tunnel and AMJV’s Brickell City Centre projects.

Since moving to Miami-Dade from Puerto Rico in 1986, Ms. Weinberg has served on youth, education and health organizations’ boards like Aspira of Florida, World ORT and the American Cancer Society. Ms. Weinberg’s wide array of work has brought her a number of accolades, including:

  • 2006 “Up & Comer” award by The South Florida Business Journal
  • 2009 and 2013 Hispanic Achievers Award by the Florida joint Puerto Rican Chambers of Commerce
  • 2010 Pace Setter of the Year Award by the National Conference of Puerto Rican Women
  • 2011 Woman of the Year and 2012 Elected Official of the Year Award by the South Florida Hispanic Chamber of Commerce
  • 2013 Elaine Gordon You Make a Difference Award by Miami-Dade Days in Tallahassee.

Commissioner Weinberg lives in Aventura with her three children Jonathan, Jessica and Justin.
