HOY SPACE: Isabel Avila
Continuing to December 8, 2012
HOY SPACE

Los Angeles-based photographer Isabel Avila is the fifth artist to engage with VPAM’s HOY SPACE, a new project gallery featuring artists who address current and active contemporary topics in their work and whose practice may extend across media.

Avila’s photographic project Parallel Worlds explores the relationship between Mexican American and Native American cultures. Her work addresses the complexities and interconnectivity of shared identities between these two cultures. For many tribal members throughout the Southwest, growing up within the constructs of the Mexican-American experience has made them identify as Chicano; likewise, many Chicanos herald their indigenous roots as significant cultural markers. These convergences, as well as the solidarity between the two cultures, serve as the basis of her project.
