Arbor Day Celebration Remembers Virginia Nelson
The City of Simi Valley’s Tree Advisory Board announced plans for its 14th Annual Arbor Day program set for 10:00 a.m., Saturday, March 15, 2014, at the Veterans Plaza area in Rancho Tapo Community Park, located at 3700 Avenida Simi. The City of Simi Valley is being recognized by the National Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree City USA and Tree Growth Community.
The program focused on the theme “Trees Are Treasures”. Those in attendance were greeted by a display of colored posters generated by local fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students who participated in the local Arbor Day Poster Contest program. Science Fair projects created by local sixth grade students were on display.
Included in the program is a presentation of awards to the winners of the local Arbor Day Poster Contest and Science Fair programs, and the planting of cherry trees to posthumously honor two residents of Simi Valley who made a contribution to the community: Nancy Bender and Virginia Nelson. Virginia is the sister of Hispanic Lifestyle producer Richard Sandoval.
