CASA 0101 THEATER PRESENTS
THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF REAL WOMEN HAVE CURVES
AT NEW VENUE
The Boyle Heights-based theater company opens its 10th season in a brand new “casa”
Casa 0101 Theater proudly presents the 20th Anniversary of Real Women Have Curves to run September 9th through October 23rd, 2011. The 20th anniversary production of Real Women Have Curves, directed by Casa’s new Artistic Director Corky Dominguez, will coincide with the opening of Casa 0101 Theater’s new venue located at 2102 E First Street, Los Angeles, CA 90033 in the emerging “Boyle Heights Art District”.
An Opening Night Gala event to commemorate the opening of the venue, the theatre company’s 10th season and run of the hit play turned award-winning film Real Women Have Curves, will take place on September 9, 2011 at the new site. The Opening Night Gala will include a pre-show reception, admission to the performance, entrance to the post-show party celebrating the unveiling of the new venue, and more exciting surprises.
Before it was an award-winning film that launched the career of the talented America Ferrara, Real Women Have Curves was a play written by a then 21 year old Josefina Lopez based on her experience working in her sister’s sewing factory after graduating from high school. The play is told through the eyes of Ana, an 18 year old chubby, pretty girl, with aspirations for a life beyond years and years of “puro lomo” – the hard, back-breaking labor that had been her parent’s lot.
Real Women Have Curves tackles issues of beauty, self-esteem, immigration, domestic abuse and generational conflicts by looking into the lives of Ana and the other women she works with – her mother, Sister Estela, and loyal employees Pancha and Rosali. The play, written over 20 years ago, boldly takes on the controversial immigration issue at a time when the subject matter was contentious and the situation dire and today remains stagnate at best and progressively getting worse. It is a testament to Lopez’s gift of merging contemporary social concerns with personal narrative, that Real Women Have Curves has had a long-lasting impact on the public.
It is also a testament to those days in her sister’s sewing factory that Lopez has had the tenacity, drive and dedication to make good on her vision to have Boyle Heights be a cultural force in an artistic renaissance for Los Angeles’s Eastside communities. The new Casa 0101 venue is just the latest artistic venture in what is becoming known as “the Boyle Heights Arts District.”
Opening Night Gala tickets are $150. Previews are September 7th and 8th, 2011. General performances are September 9th through October 23rd, 2011, Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00pm, Sundays at 5:00pm. *Special Saturday matinees in Spanish September 17th to October 22nd, 2011 at3:00pm.
