ALMA Awards

Hispanic Lifestyle was on the red carpet at the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) ALMA Awards. The award program is designed to promote diversity in the entertainment industry and also recognizes Latino talent in television, film, and music.

Our coverage is a little different this time. Many of people that stopped by to chat with us took the occasion to relax and spoke their minds.

Setting the stage for our Alma Award coverage is actress Constance Marie who talked about her multiple nominations without a win.

Buca di Beppo

Hispanic Lifestyle had a chance to go behind the scenes  and set up our cameras in the kitchen of Buca di Beppo. Chef Jesus Castenda who has been with the company for over 11 years prepared three new items making their menu debut.

Chef Castenda spoke about the origins of Buca di Beppo’s style of Italian cooking.

Next we meet the Pisano of Buca di Beppo’s, Richard “ERK” who gave us the background of the Italian restaurant.

Next chef prepares another Buca speciality, Spaghetti ala Norma.

We finished up our visit by touching base with our host Richard as he spoke about wine parings and how you might finish up a big family meal.

 

Variety Boys & Girls Club 

Located in the Boyle Heights area of Los Angeles for over 60 years, is the Variety Boys & Girls Club. With many community leaders in attendance they celebrated a major milestone by completing the construction their dream building.

Mr.  Robie Aguila their executive director spoke to Hispanic Lifestyle about what the ribbon cutting ceremony means to club’s members and the community.

I asked Robie if there were other major projects the club might undertake in the future.

Taking part in the celebration was the Mayor of Los Angeles Antonio R. Villaraigosa.  The mayor took the occasion to reflect on his connection to the boys and girls club.

We also had a chance to speak with City Council member José Huizar who spoke about the neighborhood where the club is located.

We went on to ask the council member about his priorities for the 14th district that he represents.

Hispanic Lifestyle spoke with Javier Valenzuela Financial Consultant, Cambridge Financial Partners, LLC and Hector Galvan (Sprint Hispanic Corporate Communications) almuni’s of the Variety Boys and Girls club who are now executives with corporations about how their time at the club influenced their lives.

Also taking part of in the ribbon cutting ceremony was Monica Garcia, Board President of the Los Angeles Unified School district. Ms. Garcia shared her thoughts and feelings about the day.

We asked Ms. Garcia about the community leaders supporting the fundraising effort for the club.

We finished our conversation with the Board President by asking her thoughts on the challenges that lie ahead for school district.

Before we get into our annual coverage of the legislative issues affecting Latinos, we had a chance to profile a restaurant that caught our attention for two reasons. First they had only been open for a month and second they are just a couple of blocks away from California’s state capitol.

Our guide during this visit was Luis Navarro who describe the new restaurant’s recipe for success.

Inspired by the various regions of Mexico, Chef Alacon prepared the restaurant’s signature Sample Platter for us to taste.

The items ranged from Panucho’s representing the region of Yucatan to Roasted Pablano pepper strips from Mexico City.

Hispanic Lifestyle discovered another California Jewel brought to our attention by my sister Virginia. Located in Simi Valley, the Strathearn Historical Park and Museum has made a commitment to preserving the cities history.

We spoke with Patricia Havens who provided historical facts of area and Simi Valley’s roots tied to country of Spain.

Pat went on to talk about the origins of the houses and structures located on the parks grounds.

It’s summer  . . and time for fun. Our friends at Disney Resorts invited Hispanic Lifestyle to preview some of their upcoming attractions.

Here to talk with us about the new little mermaid attraction is Claudia with her very special friend.

Next we speak with Rene (Torrico) who shares insights about the theme of new parade at Disneyland.

RODS AND RAILS 2011

Hispanic Lifestyle makes a return visit to the Rods and Rail event that take places at the Orange Empire Railway Museum located in Perris, California.  With hundreds of cars and classic bikes participating in the one day event.

We had chance to speak with Mario who leads the car and bike club, Family Affair about their organization.

I ask the members of Family Affair just how much time and effort goes into customizing their bikes.

We next had a chance to speak with the executive director of a youth mariachi group that was making their debut appearance at the event.

Rudy went on to speak about the groups future plans.

Hispanic Lifestyle spent the afternoon at one of our favorite events, the annual convention of the National Association of Latino independent producers. This is the event where talented Latinos gather to promote their latest projects or get their films funded.  A trend at this year’s conference was that many Latino projects are being distributed on the web.

Hispanic Lifestyle spoke with award winning director, writer Dennis Leoni about his involvement at this years NALIP conference.

I asked Dennis why he choose to the distribute Los American over the web?

Right before Dennis stepped away, we asked how was he able to recruit seasoned Latino actors for his project.

A couple years back Hispanic Lifestyle was approached at the conference by filmmaker Carmen Marron.  We spoke with Carmen who was producing her first project under the condition that she come back and tell us how her project ended up.

I wanted to know if there was a financial commitment to enter your work at various films festivals.

Given Carmen’s commitment of resources to her project, I asked how she kept her self motivated over the entire process.

We finished with Carmen by asking what’s next for her professionally.

I consider comedian, actor, community activist Paul Rodriguez an icon in the world of Latino entertainment. I had the opportunity to sit down with Paul to talk about his one man show “Just for the record” as he spoke frankly about his career in the industry he clearly loves.
