The American Heart Association’s Go Red Por Tu Corazon and Chef Hamlet Garcia Raise Awareness Among Latinas About Heart Disease This National Wear Red Day, women across the nation can support the fight against their No. 1 killer

Heart disease continues to be the No. 1 killer of Latinas in the U.S. In fact, more women die of heart disease than all forms of cancer combined. Unfortunately, the killer isn’t as easy to see, and may be difficult to identify for Latinas and their families. This Friday, Feb. 3 2012, is National Wear Red Day, a day meant to motivate Hispanic women in our communities to make healthy life choices for themselves and the ones they love to help stop heart disease. This February, Go Red Por Tu Corazón will be joining forces with Chef Hamlet García, host on Vme Cocina to help spread awareness about heart disease and how to decrease risk factors such as obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. “Our heart health is really in our hands. As Latinos, sometimes we are used to eating large portions and cooking with fatty oils. One of the first steps we can take is to make small changes to the food we cook in our homes,” said Chef Hamlet, spokesperson for Go Red Por Tu Corazón. “This directly influences our heart health, and allows us to continue enjoying moments with our loved ones.” Currently, some eight million women in the U.S. are living with heart disease, yet only one in six women believe that heart disease is her greatest health threat. In fact, 90 percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease. Eva Gomez, 2011 Go Red Por Tu Corazón spokesperson, comments on her experience. “I could not believe it,” said Eva. “Now I am one of the many women who suffer from heart disease – the number one killer among Latinas”. “After my experience, I have made many changes in my life to maintain Heart health,” said Eva. “The first thing I had to change was my eating habits. I eliminated fried and greasy foods and substituted them for healthier foods.” The good news is that heart disease can be prevented. In fact, 80 percent of cardiac events in women are linked to poor choices, involving diet, physical activity and smoking. Women must make the right choices to change this statistic. That’s why Go Red Por Tu Corazón, the bilingual movement of the American Heart Association was developed to offer Hispanic women and their families the tools and resources necessary to be healthier using practical tips that are culturally relevant. Local Events Local Red Dress Dash and Go Red CONNECT events will be held across the country throughout the month of February. Latinas who share their stories about heart disease have the chance to become a spokesperson for the cause representing Go Red Por Tu Corazón in marketing materials, at events, and on GoRedForWomen.org and GoRedCorazon.org. Visit GoRedCorazon.org for more information about local Go Red CONNECT events and how to participate in National Wear Red Day. CALIFORNIA FRESHWORKS FUND DELIVERS ON HEALTHY FOOD ACCESS http://www.hispaniclifestyle.com/articles/community/california-freshworks-fund-delivers-on-healthy-food-access/ http://www.hispaniclifestyle.com/articles/community/california-freshworks-fund-delivers-on-healthy-food-access/#comments Wed, 01 Feb 2012 23:25:30 +0000 Richard Sandoval http://www.hispaniclifestyle.com/?p=4926

HEALTH HAPPENS IN NEIGHBORHOODS CALIFORNIA FRESHWORKS FUND DELIVERS ON HEALTHY FOOD ACCESS PROMISE IN INGLEWOOD, CITY HEIGHTS AND SOUTH LOS ANGELES

California FreshWorks Fund Projected to Create Or Retain Up To 6000 Jobs in California!

Today, First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama joined Robert K. Ross, M.D., CEO of The California Endowment and other local leaders to celebrate the first tangible examples of progress facilitated by the California FreshWorks Fund, a $264 million public-private partnership loan fund led by The California Endowment and an all-star team of partners to bring affordable healthy food access to underserved communities around the state.

The event featured fresh and healthy foods that will soon be available at the abandoned Inglewood site that, with the help of California FreshWorks Fund financing, will soon become a Northgate Gonzalez Market.

Northgate Gonzalez Markets was once a small family-owned grocer and has grown to be a community staple in dozens of locations across California.  The California FreshWorks Fund committed in excess of $20 million in financing to Northgate Gonzalez Markets for their first three projects: a recently opened City Heights, San Diego location and two planned stores in Inglewood and South Los Angeles. In keeping with the Northgate brand, these new locations will prioritize healthy food retailing as they expand their company, create jobs, and help nourish communities that otherwise lack access to healthy AND affordable food.

“The FreshWorks Fund is helping Northgate transform the health of communities!,” said Gonzalez.  “We value being able to contribute to the health and well being of the neighborhoods we serve.  Stores #34 in City Heights and #35 in Inglewood may not have been possible without this help.”

Scott Sporte, Chief Lending Officer, NCB Capital Impact, one of the primary partners managing the FreshWorks Fund, said, “We value helping stores like Northgate Gonzalez Markets expand to areas with limited access to affordable, healthy foods – not just because they are fresh grocery experts, but because they are committed to the health and well being of the communities they serve.”

In addition to the First Lady, speakers include President and CEO of the California Endowment Robert K. Ross, M.D., Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Inglewood Mayor James Butts, Northgate Gonzalez Markets COO and Co-President Oscar Gonzalez, and community leaders from around Los Angeles. Speakers noted the visible progress being made in communities in the region, but also illustrated the need to do more. “Health Happens in our Neighborhoods,” said Robert K. Ross, CEO of The California Endowment, a lead partner for the FreshWorks Fund.  “We all have a shared interest in ensuring our neighborhoods, grocery stores and school cafeterias contribute positively to the health of our communities. Today’s announcement marks the beginning of what we hope will be a robust effort to expand access to nutritious food for all Californians!”

Last July, Mrs. Obama celebrated nationwide commitments by the California FreshWorks Fund and major retailers to open or expand stores in areas with limited access to healthy food. The California FreshWorks Fund partners include grocers, major banks, health care entities, research experts and others. The fund is modeled after the successful Pennsylvania Fresh Food Financing Initiative and was developed to align with the National Healthy Food Financing Initiative (HFFI).

By driving economic development and encouraging innovation in healthy food retailing practices, the Fund not only creates jobs, but also helps Californians gain greater access to healthy food choices and lead healthier lives.

The California Endowment, a private, statewide health foundation, was established in 1996 to expand access to affordable, quality health care for underserved individuals and communities, and to promote fundamental improvements in the health status of all Californians. Headquartered in downtown Los Angeles, The Endowment has regional offices in Sacramento, Oakland, Fresno and San Diego, with program staff working throughout the state. The Endowment challenges the conventional wisdom that medical settings and individual choices are solely responsible for people’s health. The Endowment believes that health happens in neighborhoods, schools, and with prevention. For more information, visit The California Endowment’s homepage at www.calendow.org

California FreshWorks Fund partners include: The California Endowment, NCB Capital Impact, NCB, Unified Grocers, California Grocers Association, Kaiser Permanente, Dignity Health (formerly Catholic Healthcare West), Calvert Foundation, Social Compact, Emerging Markets, PolicyLink, JP Morgan Chase, Morgan Stanley, Bank of America, U.S. Bank, Community Health Councils, Community Redevelopment Agency of the City of Los Angeles and most recently Met Life, Citibank, Opportunity Finance Network, and Charles Schwab Bank.

Partnership contributes to Generation 1st Degree, an HSF initiative with the goal of adding more than 14 million new Hispanic college graduates by 2025

The Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) and Olive Garden announced today its partnership through the first-ever “Cocinando un Futuro” scholarship program. Ten talented students have been selected as scholarship recipients due to their exemplary passion for culinary arts and academic achievement. Together, the HSF and Olive Garden collaboration empowers Generation 1st Degree, the national movement to raise the Hispanic degree attainment rate to 60 percent by ensuring that every Latino household has at least one college graduate.

“The Hispanic Scholarship Fund is committed to raising awareness among America’s Latino families about the importance of a college education and help them secure the resources they need to earn a college degree,” stated Frank Alvarez, HSF president and CEO. “With the help of Olive Garden through the ‘Cocinando un Futuro’ scholarship program, we are able to bring this commitment to life.”

The HSF and Olive Garden “Cocinando un Futuro” scholarship program provides scholarships, up to $2,500 per student, to undergraduate minority students who are enrolled full-time at a U.S. accredited college or university during the 2011-2012 academic year. The students were selected from a highly competitive pool of applicants interested in culinary arts, who met specific criteria that included attaining a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale, demonstrating personal strengths and leadership and have an unmet financial need requiring support in their efforts to obtain a college degree.

“Olive Garden is proud to partner with the Hispanic Scholarship Fund and we’re honored to help award the ‘Cocinando un Futuro’ scholarships to a talented group of students that share our passion for food and hospitality,” said Julio Suarez, director of diversity outreach for Darden Restaurants, Inc., the parent company of Olive Garden. “One of Darden’s priorities as a community partner is to support access to postsecondary education as a way to empower and enable youth to pave their own path to success. The ‘Cocinando un Futuro’ program is a perfect way for us to bring this support to the Hispanic community.”

Blueprint to Support California Manufacturing Jobs http://www.hispaniclifestyle.com/articles/business/blueprint-to-support-california-manufacturing-jobs/ http://www.hispaniclifestyle.com/articles/business/blueprint-to-support-california-manufacturing-jobs/#comments Wed, 25 Jan 2012 23:50:59 +0000 Richard Sandoval http://www.hispaniclifestyle.com/?p=4871

President Obama’s Blueprint to Support California Manufacturing Jobs,

Discourage Outsourcing, and Encourage Insourcing

In his State of the Union address, President Obama laid out a Blueprint for an America Built to Last, encouraging companies to create manufacturing jobs in the United States while removing deductions for shipping jobs overseas and encouraging insourcing. During the past two years, we have begun to see positive signs in American manufacturing – with the manufacturing sector adding more than 300,000 jobs since December 2009, with companies engaging in the emerging trend of “insourcing” by bringing jobs back and making additional investments in the United States.

The proposals the President is describing today are designed to build on this progress.  They include six proposals that Congress should act on immediately to encourage job growth in the United States and that are fully paid for by closing tax loopholes that encourage the shifting of jobs and shielding of profits overseas. The measures the President is announcing will help support the manufacturing sector in California, which employs 1,241,000 workers across the state. It will increase the incentives for the approximately 38,000 manufacturing firms located in California to invest and create new jobs here rather than abroad, while encouraging other manufacturers to start up and move here. These investments will help not only create new manufacturing jobs, but also those throughout the economy whose jobs are supporting by manufacturing – up and down the supply chain, and in manufacturing communities.

The President is proposing the following revenue-neutral reform package to support manufacturing, discourage outsourcing, and encourage insourcing that Congress should act on immediately:

  1. 1.      Removing tax deductions for shipping jobs overseas and providing new incentives for bringing them back home (revenue neutral)The tax code currently allows companies moving operations overseas to deduct their moving expenses – and reduce their taxes in the United States as a result.  The President is proposing to change that.  These deductions will be denied, and companies will no longer be provided deductions for moving their operations abroad. At the same time, the President is proposing to give a 20 percent income tax credit for the expenses of moving operations back into the United States to help companies bring jobs home.
  • For example: If a company was closing a plant to move that plant overseas and incurred $1 million in expenses – ranging from the cost of scrapping equipment to shipping physical capital to clean up costs – it could right now deduct those expenses, and get a tax reduction of $350,000 (assuming the firm faces the 35 percent statutory tax rate).  The President proposes to eliminate this tax deduction.  And, if a corporation moving jobs to the U.S. incurred similar expenses, the President proposes to provide that company with a tax credit of $200,000 to help offset these costs and encourage investment here at home.
  1. 2.      Targeting the domestic production incentive on manufacturers who create jobs here at home and doubling the deduction for advanced manufacturing (revenue neutral):  In conjunction with the President’s broader commitment to corporate tax reform, the Administration is proposing measures to provide incentives for manufacturing in the United States.  The Administration is proposing to reform the current deduction for domestic production by more narrowly focusing it on manufacturing activities—for example, it would no longer cover oil production.  These savings would be invested in expanding the deduction for manufacturers and doubling for advanced manufacturing technologies from its current level of 9 percent to 18 percent.
  1. 3.      Introducing a new Manufacturing Communities Tax Credit to encourage investments in communities affected by job loss ($6 billion in credits):  The President is proposing a new credit for qualified investments that help finance projects in communities that have suffered a major job loss event. This credit will provide $2 billion per year in incentives for three years.  For this purpose, a major job loss event occurs when a military base closes or a major employer closes or substantially reduces a facility or operating unit, resulting in permanent layoffs.  The tax credit would support qualified investments in this affected community – made in conjunction with State Economic Development Agencies and other local entities – that improve local economic growth.
  1. 4.      Providing temporary tax credits to drive nearly $20 billion in domestic clean energy manufacturing ($5 billion in credits) The President is proposing to extend tax credits to drive nearly $20 billion of investment in domestic clean energy manufacturing, ensuring new windmills and solar panels will incorporate parts that are produced and assembled by American workers.  This Advanced Energy Manufacturing Tax Credit – which was oversubscribed more than three times over – goes to investments in clean energy manufacturing in the United States. The additional $5 billion in tax credits the President is proposing will leverage nearly $20 billion in total investment in the United States.
  1. 5.      Reauthorizing 100% expensing of investment in plants and equipment ($4 billion) The President is proposing to extend for all of 2012 a provision that allows businesses to expense the full cost of their investments in equipment, spurring investment in the United States.  Over the next two years, this would provide businesses large and small with $50 billion in tax relief, with much of that recovered by the Treasury in subsequent years.
  1. 6.      Closing a loophole that allows companies to shift profits overseas (raises $23 billion):  Corporations right now can abuse the tax system by inappropriately shifting profits overseas from intangible property created in the United States.  The President is proposing to close this loophole.

At the same time as the President is calling for immediate enactment of this plan, he is also pushing forward on a framework for corporate tax reform that would encourage even greater investment in the United States, while eliminating tax advantages for outsourcing.  This framework will include:

  • Making companies pay a minimum tax for profits and jobs overseas and investing the savings in cutting taxes here at home, especially for manufacturingThe President is proposing to eliminate tax incentives to ship jobs offshore by ensuring that all American companies pay a minimum tax on their overseas profits, preventing other countries from attracting American business through unusually low tax rates.  The savings would be invested in cutting taxes here at home, especially for manufacturing.
  • Making permanent an expanded Research and Experimentation Tax Credit:  The President has proposed to make permanent the Research and Experimentation Tax Credit, while enhancing and simplifying the credit. About 70 percent of the benefit directly supports jobs in the United States, and every dollar spent encourages U.S.-based investment, as only research and experimentation performed in the United States is eligible.
  • Simplify the tax code and close loopholes: Over the nearly three decades since the last comprehensive reform effort, the tax system has been loaded up with special deductions, credits, and other tax expenditures that help well-connected special interests, but do little for our Nation’s economic growth.  The President’s framework will close these loopholes and simplify the tax code so businesses can focus on investing and creating jobs rather than filling out tax forms.

Building on Progress

  • Providing tax incentives to help businesses grow and investBuilding off earlier measures, the President signed into law a provision that allowed businesses, both large and small, to immediately write off 100% of the costs of new investment in equipment in the United States.  This is among the 17 tax cuts the President has signed into law for small businesses, including measures that temporarily eliminated capital gains taxes on key small business investments and raised expensing limits for small firms.
  • Providing tax incentives to support domestic investment in clean energy technology manufacturing:  The Recovery Act’s Advanced Energy Manufacturing Tax Credit provided $2.3 billion in incentives that catalyzed an additional $5.4 billion in private sector investment in projects to manufacture the next generation of solar, wind, geothermal, vehicle, energy efficiency, and other clean energy technologies.
  • Temporary tax cuts to increase investment and jobs: The President has signed into law $200 billion in tax relief and incentives for America’s businesses to encourage them to make new investments and create new jobs – relief that was paid out over the last three years.  This includes provisions that directly benefit those businesses that did the most to boost investment and hiring.
  • Cracking down on overseas tax avoidance and loopholes:  The President has taken strong steps to crack down on overseas tax evasion and loopholes – measures that will save billions of dollars over the next decade and make sure that everyone plays by the same rules.  This includes signing into law the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act, which targets tax evasion by U.S. citizens holding investments in foreign accounts, as well as measures to crack down on abuse of foreign tax credits through games that allowed multinational companies to inappropriately reduce the amount of taxes they paid here at home.
