“Your Home, Your Rights” Call to Action Meeting to Provide Essential

Information And Services About the Road to Recovery

When: Saturday October 23, 2010

Where: Neighborhood Housing Services of the Inland Empire – 1390 North “D” Street, San Bernardino, CA 92405

What: In the midst of the housing foreclosure crisis, New America Media (NAM), U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Neighborhood Housing Services of the Inland Empire, and Black Voice News are organizing “Your Home, Your Rights,” a community forum and call to action offering detailed information on what residents need to know about home ownership and renter’s rights. Services include confidential one-on-one legal advice and counseling on foreclosure, fair housing and predatory lending issues (including advice to tenants in buildings that have been foreclosed on), as well as helping low- and moderate-income victims of predatory lending and foreclosure related abuses find legal representation.

Attendees can share stories with journalists and the media about the foreclosure crisis and get answers to their questions from housing counselors, tax experts and the Office of the Alameda County District Attorney (in charge of investigating predatory loans). Also scheduled is a selection of informational seminars about surviving the crisis.

Admission is free, food and refreshments provided at no-cost.

Organizers: New America Media (NAM), based in San Francisco’s South of Market neighborhood, organizes the nation’s first and largest network of ethnic news services. Neighborhood Housing Services of the Inland Empire is an affiliate of NeighborWorks® America, established by Congress in 1978 to increase the capacity of local community-based housing organizations to revitalize their communities, improve housing opportunities for working families, and develop partnerships with residents, local government, financial institutions, and the business community to strengthen and improve neighborhood quality of life.  NHSIE was founded in 1981 by Leonard Davenport, Luis Navarette, and Jack Hill, three World War II veterans, who wanted to make homeownership available to African Americans in San Bernardino.   From these humble beginnings NHSIE today serves low to moderate income first-time home buyers, current homeowners, neighborhoods, and the business community by providing comprehensive home buyer education opportunities, redevelopment services, home maintenance workshops, neighborhood clean-ups, resource referrals, one-on-one counseling, and housing industry events and conferences to residents and industry specialists throughout San Bernardino and Riverside counties.
