Golfers from throughout Southern California are invited to participate in the Second Annual Inland Empire Future Leaders Program (IEFLP) Golf Tournament on Friday, September 16th at the Shandin Hills Golf Club in San Bernardino.

“We are grateful to our sponsors and participants that make this event a reality,” said Dr. Tom Rivera, Director of the IEFLP program. “All proceeds raised during the tournament will go towards the 2012 summer leadership conference for eighth and ninth-grade students in San Bernardino and Riverside counties.”

With a variety of sponsorship opportunities still available, the tournament will begin with an 11 a.m. registration and will kick off with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Participants will play 18 holes of golf on the beautiful Shandin Hills Golf Club course, followed by an awards dinner at 5:30 p.m. The tournament will also feature such events as:

  • Hole in One Contest
  • Longest Drive Contests for Men & Women
  • Closest to the Pin Contests for Men & Women
  • Awards for First & Second Place Teams for Men & Women
  • Pro-Staff Golf Lessons

Over the past 26 years, the Inland Empire Future Leaders Program has worked to make an impact on low graduation rates and even lower college enrollment rates of students in the Inland Empire. Through its summer leadership conference six-day training program, 120 students are challenged annually to deal with diverse issues and concepts of leadership, cultural awareness, self-esteem, college preparedness and career guidance.

“During the summer leadership conference, students interact with role models representing professions such as law, medicine, engineering, education, government, and community volunteer organizations,” said Rivera. “It is important that we not only motivate students, but teach them leadership skills and characteristics that impact their schools and communities as well.”

The summer leadership conference has succeeded in making a difference in the lives of students throughout the Inland Empire. The program has reached more than 3,300 Latino eighth and ninth grade students, resulting in 99 percent of those who attend graduating from high school, with nine out of ten going on to college.
